May MVP: Eddie Black

Catcher Eddie Black struggled at either end of the season, but his 15 game hitting streak in the middle of the month was a huge reason that the offense was as explosive as it was. Sure, there was ample support, notably from Jaspero Gonzalez who always seems to be on base, but Black not only strung together an extensive streak, it was a streak where every game seemed to have multiple hits off the bat of the young catcher. The team definitely hopes to get a little more support from his rotation this month. Can Eddie work his magic calling games too?

Palms 11, Orioles 4

Each team hit three home runs in this game, mostly from nontypical home run sources. The Orioles received the blasts from Matt Wieters, Julio Lugo and Corey Patterson, while the Palms saw long balls off the bats of Randy Winn, Martin Prado and Ryan Henning. Henning isn't as surprising this season. What is surprising is that he is tied atop the team leaderboard for home runs, with 9. The Palms managed to double up the Orioles three times. 3b Prado 3-6 2R SS Gonzalez 3-6 2R RF Sohn 3-4 BB C Black 1-5 LF Sadan 1-5 K 2b Henning 1-5 R 1b Fields 0-4 BB R 2K CF Crisp 2-3 2BB 3R 2b Gonzalez (12) Crisp (10) 3b Sohn (2) HR Prado (5) Winn (4) Henning (9) RBI Prado 3 (25) Gonzalez (28) Sohn 3(38) Black (35) Winn 2 (16) Henning (26) Pitcher W-L S IP H R ER BB SO HR Vazquez W 6-2 9 14 4 4 0 8 3 Player of the Game: Martin Prado 24-28 10.5GB

Troy Munoz had one of his best outings of the season, going 8 strong with 7 strikeouts and allowing only two runs, both on Carlos Pena sacrifices. James Shields was better, however, holding the Palms scoreless to come back to earn the series split in Tampa. They head to Baltimore for a three game set starting tomorrow. The problem so far

The Palms offense could be one for the ages. They have 257 runs this year, good for 4th in the league and not too far behind their division rivals New York, Boston and Toronto, all of whom have 260. Even then, they haven't driven in runs as effectively as one might hope, stranding 374 runners. Their batting average as a team is over .300, on pace for the best in the modern era, and 7 regular starters are hitting at or above .300. Clearly, this is not why they are 4 games below .500. Instead, their atrocious pitching thus far is to blame. Even typically reliable Troy Munoz has struggled with his ERA well above 5.00. Making matters worse has been the porous bullpen. Dennis Sarfate has the best ERA at 3.62, and the team has often let games get away late. The pitching staff needs an infusion of talent or for the current roster to shape up. The offense is definitely pulling their weight.

Rays 13, Palms 6

After a few days of excellent pitching, everything fell apart. The Rays scored 7 off of Dave Balierough in the first 2 innings, which was more than enough for the Rays. They added 6 more against the bullpen for good measure. Evan Longoria hit two home runs for the Rays . Palms 11, Rays 9

Aside from a few very productive innings, the Palms were stymied at the plate. Of course, in the 5th, when they scored three runs on a Josh Fields home run, and again in the 8th when they scored 6. The Palms batted around in each of those innings, adding two more in the 7th. They took 7 walks from an erratic Tampa pitching staff, who somehow managed to walk Billy Dupont for only the second time this season. The team has secured at least a split with the Rays over the weekend. After Manny Parra tweaked his hamstring in the 4th inning on a Ben Zobrist ground ball, the bullpen came in and swept the Rays away, allowing only one run to the potent Rays offense. The Palms had the lead through most of this game, however in the 8th inning, the Yankees took a 6-5 lead after Javier Vazquez loaded the bases and Don Schoppe allowed all of his inherited runners to score. The Palms came back and scored a run on a Frank Sohn RBI single, however it was for naught as the first 4 batters for the Yankees reached in the bottom of the 9th, meaning a walk off winner off the bat of rookie Kevin Russo. Eddie Black takes his hitting streak on the road

Eddie Black has been crushing through the middle of May, taking his hitting streak to 13 games. More impressively, he has been doing it with 10 multi hit games in that stretch. Starting tonight (game results will be posted tomorrow) the Palms will be hitting the road for their longest road trip of the season. They will start in New York and spend 16 games on the road with this lengthy road swing. 4 games below 500, such a lengthy trip away from Miami could make or break the Palms' young season. Eddie Black will have ot continue swinging the hot bat if they hope to get back in contention this year.

Orlando Tiropes led off the third with a triple, scoring on a sacrifice grounder from Paul Janish. The Cubs started interleague play with a bang Friday night as they welcomed the Cubs to Miami. Javier Vazquez had another stellar outing, pitching the complete game and allowing only one run on a solo homer from Xavier Nady in the 9th. The Palms had two homers, however, in Eddie Black's 9th of the season in the second inning, and the big shot of the game, a 6th inning grand slam from Jaspero Gonzalez. A lineup shakeup

After a lackluster month of April, the manager has decided to shake things up in the batting order. He talked to the team statistician, and they put together what would be the most advantageous lineup in terms of run scored with the players available. The only player to keep his spot was Jaspero Gonzalez in the 2 hole. The best player through April at getting on base, Ayoz Sadan will now bat lead off, while Coco Crisp, Frank Sohn and Ryan Henning moved up in the order. Eddie Black, Billy Dupont, Randy Winn and Martin Prado moved down, with Prado sliding all the way to the 9th spot. The manager and statistician will be reviewing every month to make sure that the best lineup possible is on the field. Since the new order was implemented, the Palms are 3-1, scoring no fewer than 5 runs a game.

The Palms seemed to have certainly found their offense, haven't they? For the second game in a row, the Palms scored in the double digits, this time thanks to three home runs from the unlikely trio of Jaspero Gonzalez, Ryan Henning and Omir Santos. Dallas Chastanet pitched a complete game, allowing the bullpen a day off for the first day of an extended homestand.
