Diamondbacks 3, Palms 0

Of all pitchers, Zach Duke shut the Palms down for 8 innings, allowing only 4 hits and no runs. Arizona squeaked out their runs in the first, sixth and 7th by stringing together a few hits, though Miguel Montero stood out, going 4-4. Diamondbacks 9, Palms 3

On back to back nights, the Diamondbacks ran away from the Palms thanks in no small part to their bats against the enfeebled Palms bullpen. Miguel Montero drove in four for Arizona, while the Palms runs were scored on home runs by Frank Sohn and Jaspero Gonzalez. Diamondbacks 8, Palms 3

The Palms went down 3-0 early but gradually fought their way back, until they tied it in the 8th inning. Art McLoughlin came in and, well, scuffled. He had already allowed one run to the Diamondbacks, but the big blast came 4 batters later when Juan Miranda hit a grand slam to put the game out of reach once and for all. Pitching showing signs of life

In the Palms' last 10 games, despite the fact that the team has gone 4-6, the pitching is showing signs of life. The bullpen, abysmal all year, is coming around more than the starters. Ivan Fernandez is 0-3 in his last three starts, for example, but in the last 10 games, Art McLaughlin has a 1.08 ERA. Dennis Sarfate hasn't allowed a run in the 6 innings. As a staff, the opponent batting average is .288 in the past 10, well below the season average to this point. Much needs to be done to improve the staff, of course, but a few good outings are certainly appreciated.

Palms 8, Pirates 7

The Palms emptied their bullpen in this one. After Kevin Correia felt some tightness in his pitching shoulder, Thanks to pinch hitting and a little bit of scuffling, every available pitcher, including yesterday's short starter Troy Munoz was used. Munoz ended up with his first career save because the Palms came through with the go ahead run in the top of the 11th on an RBI Tony Abreu single. The game was tied in the 9th when Jaspero Gonzalez had an RBI double. The Palms came back from an early 5-1 deficit to tie it and eventually win it. Pirates 10, Palms 3

The pitching in this contest was abysmal for Miami, from Troy Munoz's 5 innings allowed over 3 innings to start to the next two pitchers allowing 5 more runs. Palms 8, Pirates 6

The Palms and Pirates fought tooth and nail for a few innings, then the Palms took off and scored three in the 8th, adding another in the 9th. Don Schoppe and Manny Parra made things interesting, however, letting the Pirates score three, including 2 on a home run by Matt Diaz. The Pirates left 2 men on base in the bottom of the inning, however, and the Palms opened the series with a win. Former Palm Eddie Black hit a solo home run with his first at bat of Javier Vazquez. Feasting on splits

The Palms are almost at the half way point on the season, and it's pretty easy to pick out who might be doing well in certain situations. Here are some examples. Against LH Pitchers, Jaspero Gonzalez is hitting .373, Paul Janish is hitting .233 Against RH Pitchers, Martin Prado is hitting .343, while Randy Winn is hitting .238. With the bases empty, Billy Dupont is hitting .377. The team has 56 solo home runs. With the bases full, the team is only batting .246. They only have 34 RBI (more with the bases empty)

Mets 4, Palms 1

It was the third solid pitching matchup in a row between the Mets and Palms, as knuckleballer R A Dickey helped shut down the Palms offense (save for a Martin Prado home run in the 5th). Ivan Fernandez did well in his outing, but scuffled in the 4th and 6th innings, allowing two in each. May MVP: Jaspero Gonzalez

It's been a long month without revealing the player of the month for May. For the second month in a row, Gonzalez was the MVP. He had three player of the game awards early but faded. He ended the month hitting .307 for the season, but his strong start kept the team from complete early collapse. Ayoz Sadan was close to winning the title thanks to his power surge, however his successes came when the team was losing.

Mets 4, Palms 3

For the second game in a row, the Palms came back on a dominant closer from the National League. They were down 1 in the bottom of the 9th in Queens, when Omir Santos had a pinch hit, one out single, followed by Frank Sohn, who also singled, and Martin Prado, who drove in the tying run. The game went to the 11th, after which Josh Thole hit a walk off home run to end it. Palms 10, Rangers 6

The Palms set into Rangers pitcher CJ Wilson early, with the first five runners reaching and scoring, including with a three run home run by Frank Sohn to cap things off. The other 5 runs were also scored against Wilson, mostly in the third, when the team hit another three run blast, this time off the bat of Omir Santos. Despite the team getting 16 hits and scoring 10 runs, Billy Dupont AND Randy Winn went hitless. Felix Gonsales issued his first base on balls of the season.
