Yankees 5, Palms 1

Despite the unfortunate looking score, this game actually ended up being much further apart than it should have been. The only runs the Yankees scored against Don Schoppe were solo home runs from Derek Jeter in the 1st and in the second from Ichiro. The Palms struggled against Ivan Nova, and the two runs would have held up, but they added more in the 8th when Lyle Overbay hit a three run homer off of the quickly fading Tim Byrdak.  New York Yankees 5, Miami Palms 1  Saturday, August 31, 2013  Miami Palms (81-53)                                      New York Yankees (6-9)                                   Player ...

Palms 15, Yankees 0

It's not often that the Yankees get smoked like they did on Friday night. The Palms arrived from Seattle and started swinging. Carlos Ruiz led the charge with a 3 run blast in the 2nd inning, an inning in which the Palms scored 5. Two innings later, CC Sabathia beaned Ruiz and was swiftly tossed. Billy Dupont and Kelly Johnson also managed to launch home runs, giving the Palms a comfortable victory, and ensuring that Miami will have a .500 record this season.  Miami Palms 15, New York Yankees 0  Friday, August 30, 2013  Miami Palms (81-52)                                      New York Yankees (5-9)                                ...

Palms 6, Mariners 4 (11 innings)

The Palms won their series in Seattle, but it wasn't pretty. Blake Johnston was very good until the 8th inning, when with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, he gave up an RBI double and a 2 run homer to Justin Smoak and Franklin Gutierrez respectively. In the 11th, the Palms mounted their first extra inning rally, with a Gregor Blanco and a two run homer from Martin Prado. They added another run later in the inning just to finish things off. Miami is the first team to 80 wins this season.  Miami Palms 7, Seattle Mariners 4  Thursday, August 29, 2013  Miami Palms (80-52)                                      Seattle Mariners (1-2)                           ...

Mariners 8, Palms 1

The Mariners are one of the worst offensive teams in the league, but they didn't show it against Troy Munoz and the rest of the Miami staff on Wednesday. Seattle led off the game with 5 straight hits, and scored three runs on a bases loaded double by Kendrys Morales. The Mariners also had 2 homers, from Kyle Seager and Justin Smoak to broaden the lead. Felix Hernandez made sure there was no chance that this was a real game.  Seattle Mariners 8, Miami Palms 1  Wednesday, August 28, 2013  Miami Palms (79-52)                                      Seattle Mariners (1-1)                                   Player   ...

Palms 6, Mariners 4

It appeared for 7 innings that Kyle Blume had returned to form, but his 8th inning, capped by a 3 run shot by Kyle Seager sort of shattered that impression. Fortunately, the Palms already had 6 runs at that point, including from home runs for Frank Sohn and Chris Korb. Sohn also had a triple in his next at bat.  Miami Palms 6, Seattle Mariners 4  Tuesday, August 27, 2013  Miami Palms (79-51)                                      Seattle Mariners (0-1)                                   Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB   Ave  ...

Pitchers respectable at the plate

The Miami Palms are now done with interleague play for the season, and they can happily say that the pitching performance wasn't that bad. Even the performance at bat wasn't so bad. As a whole, the pitching staff had a .214 average with 3 runs batted in. They even had a double off the bat of Felix Gonsales, who had 2 of the pitchers' runs batted in.

Palms 5, Giants 2

The Palms salvaged their series in San Francisco with a Sunday afternoon victory. They sent 8 men to the plate in the 3rd, scoring three runs. They added two more in later innings, while also generating a strong pitching performance from Don Schoppe, Felix Gonsales and Manny Parra.  Miami Palms 5, San Francisco Giants 2  Sunday, August 25, 2013  Miami Palms (78-51)                                      San Francisco Giants (4-2)                               Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB   Ave      Player    ...

Giants 4, Palms 1

The Palms lost their second game to the Giants in as many nights thanks to a big late home run from Brett Pill off of Tim Byrdak. Before that, Lucas Harrell and Ivan Fernandez had held the Giants to only 1 run. The Palms got off to a good start, when Carlos Ruiz hit a solo homerun in the first inning. They only had 5 more hits and no more runs, however.  San Francisco Giants 4, Miami Palms 1  Saturday, August 24, 2013  Miami Palms (77-51)                                      San Francisco Giants (4-1)                               Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB...

Will the AL East get 3 teams in the playoffs?

Miami has a record of 77-50 and is well in front of Tampa and Boston for the AL East lead. The Palms maintain a 4 game lead on the two divisional rivals. Even more impressively, those two teams have 2.5 game leads over the Oakland A's, which, if the season ended today, would mean that Tampa would play Boston for the right to play in the final postseason spot. The Palms are done playing the Red Sox this season, but have one more series forthcoming against the Rays. Their schedule will leave chances for a postseason bid wide open .

Giants 6, Palms 2

It was an unfortunate return to the bad luck that plagued Blake Johnston early this year. The Giants strung together singles to score their runs, with bloops and dribblers over and through the infield. Only a Buster Posey double was hit hard. The hardest hit ball of the game was a two run homer from Kelly Johnson, but Madison Bumgarner, strong through the game, had already struck him out three times.  San Francisco Giants 6, Miami Palms 2  Friday, August 23, 2013  Miami Palms (77-50)                                      San Francisco Giants (3-1)                               Player          AB R...

Is Kyle Blume broken?

On the 2nd of August, Kyle Blume threw a complete game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He has also managed to compile several complete games, and only has two outings where he went less than 5 innings. To say the rookie has been u sed liberally would be an understatement. Part of the reason he has been used so much has been his success rate. Still, the question remains as to whether or not the work load was too much. Since that complete game outing, Blume has had three outings, each progressively shorter than the previous. Taken cumulatively, he has put together 15 innings of work with 17 innings allowed. He has allowed 32 hits, 4 home runs, definitely a change of pace from how he has pitched this year. With the Palms preparing for the postseason , the Palms hope he can piece it back together in order to help Miami make a deep run.

Palms 7, Red Sox 5

The Palms took down their closes divisional rival in a turnaround from a bad night on Tuesday. Troy Munoz allowed a lot of base runners, but only two of those runners crossed the plate. The Palms didn't have one big hit, but they did manage to string together a bunch of them, scoring 6 runs over the course of three innings from the 2nd to 4th inning. The Red Sox did get a big blast, when Dustin Pedroia drove in more than half of his team's runs with a three run 6th inning homer.  Miami Palms 7, Boston Red Sox 5  Wednesday, August 21, 2013  Miami Palms (77-49)                                      Boston Red Sox (6-11)                             ...

Red Sox 14, Palms 5

The Palms looked like they were in good shape early in this game, as Frank Sohn hit a three run blast. Unfortunately, the Red Sox hit 5 home runs in the game, including 2 off of Kyle Blume, who has ran into a rough patch of late. Every reliever also gave up a home run as well. Hopefully, this game is just a bump in the road, and the Palms come back strong tomorrow.  Boston Red Sox 14, Miami Palms 5  Tuesday, August 20, 2013  Miami Palms (76-49)                                      Boston Red Sox (6-10)                                    Player          AB R  H BI BB SO...

Palms 8, Red Sox 5

After a pair of tough pitchers duels, the Palms had a offensive slug fest, with 29 hits between the two teams at Fenway. Steve Drysdale became the first player for the Twins to get to 30 home runs as well as the first to drive in 100 runs. Nick Markakis collected 4 hits, and every batter in the game reached base for Miami. Daniel Nava was the only player between the two teams not to reach base  Miami Palms 8, Boston Red Sox 5  Monday, August 19, 2013  Miami Palms (76-48)                                      Boston Red Sox (5-10)                                    Player        ...
