Palms starters going deep

The Palms may not have the best strike out pitchers in a rotation in the Majors today, but they do have stamina. Every member of the rotation is averaging at least 6 innings a start, while three pitchers are going 7 a start, remarkable this day in age. The offense has been foundering so the record doesn't reflect all the benefit of this strong staff, but an intact and well staffed bullpen is reaping the benefits. 3 pitchers have sub-2.00 ERA's out of the pen, and arms that aren't yet terribly fatigued. This will be a benefit as the season marches on and bats finally wake up.

Palms 7, Yankees 1

The Palms finally snapped a losing streak that has sunk the team all the way back to .500. Miami did it with home runs and a very good start. The Palms hit 3 dingers, including two from Frank Sohn, who had 4RBI as well. Manny Parra went 8 innings with 5 strikeouts and only 4 hits. The Palms can still win this series, which they hope to do behind Dylan Bundy on Thursday.  Miami Palms 7, New York Yankees 1  Wednesday, May 23, 2018  New York Yankees (2-3)                                   Miami Palms (24-23)                                      Player          AB R  H BI BB SO...

Yankees 3, Palms 1

Miami took their issues back home, as they flailed at the plate against Domingo German. The Yankees starter tallied 11 strikeouts in 8 innings, including 4 against Brett Hayes alone. The Palms got a good outing from Jarod Lantz, but a 2 run 7th from the Yankees gave Lantz and the Palms the L.  New York Yankees 3, Miami Palms 1  Tuesday, May 22, 2018  New York Yankees (2-2)                                   Miami Palms (23-23)                                      Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB   Ave      Player...

Off day comes at the right time

The Palms are coming off a 4 game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves, which was preceded by dropping a series in Boston and getting swept by the Mets before that. They’ve been unable to take a break before today. Perhaps the issues are unrelated to rest, but certainly a bit of time to get their heads right will be greatly appreciated by the woebegone team. Returning from a day off, they will be at home with the top of their rotation ready to battle. Edwin Encarnacion hasn't had the start that he would hope for so far this season, but returning from Atlanta, he will be a regular part of the lineup again as well. Either the Palms starters need to return to the dominant form of the beginning of the year, or they will need some increased offensive production. The return to Miami and the day off to get there will both help everyone get their heads screwed on straight.

Braves 7, Palms 1

The Palms road trip has finally ended, and it did so with the same whimper it started with. The Palms had only 5 hits, while the Braves had 4 home runs! Julio Teheran pitched the complete game, scattering those 5 hits, and Tyler Flowers hit 2 of his teams' blasts. The Braves ended up sweeping the Palms in 4 games.  Atlanta Braves 7, Miami Palms 1  Sunday, May 20, 2018  Miami Palms (23-22)                                      Atlanta Braves (4-3)                                     Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB   Ave ...

Palms struggling despite some successes

The Miami Palms are having a heck of a time getting going this season. They started off very quickly, but their last 11 games have produced a 2-9 record. Two primary culprits are at play. The first is most notable from the scorelines: They haven’t been scoring many runs. They aren’t using the long ball as much as in recent seasons and aren’t hitting with runners in scoring position. Tony Abreu and Pat Grant are off to flying starts, with Jaspero Gonzalez not far behind, but only with their batting averages. There isn’t a player on the team expected to hit much more than 20 homers this season, if trends continue. Beyond that, the Palms have been giving up far too many long balls, especially with runners on base, or in late/close situations. Brian Matusz has really struggled as a closer so far this year, but Cody Allen has had his bumps in the road as well. When games are tight because the offense isn’t pushing runs across the plate, these scores from opponents are even more damaging....

Braves 7, Palms 3

Charlie Culberson put it to the Miami Palms on Saturday night. The left fielder hit two home runs, and both of them with runners on base. As a result, he ended up with 5 RBI, and helped Braves fans forget about a short start from Sean Newcomb. The Palms have now lost 10 of their last 12.  Atlanta Braves 7, Miami Palms 3  Saturday, May 19, 2018  Miami Palms (23-21)                                      Atlanta Braves (3-3)                                     Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A  E LOB   Ave      Pl...

Braves 5, Palms 4 (10 Innings)

The Palms have had a rough stretch, but tonight, at the very least, they showed resolve. They fell behind 4-0 eaely aftera big 3 run Preston Tucker blast. The Palms wriggled thei way back in, including a 2 run Edwin Encarnacion double. The game was lost, however, in the 10th inning, when Ozzie Albies led the inning off and walked it off on Archie Bradley's only pitch  Atlanta Braves 5, Miami Palms 4  Friday, May 18, 2018  Miami Palms (23-20)                                      Atlanta Braves (2-3)                                     Player          AB R  H BI BB ...

Braves 5, Palms 2

Brandon McCarthy and Manny Parra pitched to a stalemate though 6 innings, but the Braves opened the game up in the 7th, batting around against Cody Allen. Allen gave up a lead off home run to Ozzie Albies butt manages to leave the bases stranded to give the Palms some semblance of a chance. Alas, Miami never executed, and their slide continued.  Atlanta Braves 5, Miami Palms 2  Thursday, May 17, 2018  Miami Palms (23-19)                                      Atlanta Braves (1-3)                                     Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P  A...

Palms 3, Red Sox 2

The Palms scratched across three runs, spread across the game. Miami's real star was Jarod Lantz, who worked 8 innings of 8 hit ball, while the Palms were able to get to Chris Sale early. They scored the a needed insurance run on a Chris Korb single in the 8th. Brian Matusz even scored a save, as the game was won on a unassisted Tony Abreu double play.  Miami Palms 3, Boston Red Sox 2  Wednesday, May 16, 2018  Miami Palms (23-18)                                      Boston Red Sox (5-2)                                     Player          AB R  H BI BB SO  P...

Red Sox 5, Palms 3 (10 Innings)

The Palms gave up the tying run in the bottom of the 9th, but Jaspero Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the 10th, and looked like they were going to take a game at Fenway. Brian Matusz was left in for the bottom of the 10th, and unfortunately, the Sox couldn't be retired in the 10th, with the first two batters reaching before Hanley Ramirez homered and won the game in walk off fashion.  Boston Red Sox 5, Miami Palms 3  Tuesday, May 15, 2018  Miami Palms (22-17)                                      Boston Red Sox (4-1)                                     Player          A...
