Power outage in Miami

On the final day of the trade season, the real headline in Miami was a power outage at Coca Cola Palms Park. The game scheduled for tonight against the Tigers has been rescheduled for tomorrow, which was intended to have a travel day.

Different Directions

Perhaps the third spot in the order is cursed. After Ayoz Sadan languished in the 3rd spot, Frank Sohn has gone .222 there in the past 10 games. Still worse, another middle of the order guy, Billy Dupont is hitting .200 over the same timeframe. On the other hand, Jaspero Gonzalez is hitting .405 for the past 10 games, including 3 home runs. Surprisingly, Randy Winn also has 3 big blasts in the past 10.

Palms 8, Tigers 0

Javier Vazquez, Felix Gonsales and Blake Johnston combined to shut the Tigers down. The Palms got most of their runs when they batted around in the 3rd. Surprisingly, things could have been even more lopsided, as the Palms had 15 hits. White Sox 2, Palms 1

It was a good old fashioned pitchers duel between Philip Humber of the White Sox and Dave Balierough of the Palms. Each side had a solo homer, from Alexi Ramirez and Martin Prado, but the real difference came on Ramirez's RBI single in the 5th. The Collapse of Troy Munoz

Since July 19th, an 8 inning, 6 hit domination of the Giants, Troy Munoz has had only one quality start. For over a month, Munoz has struggled to keep the ball in his teamate's gloves. The problem has been balls dropping in play and not really any fault of Munoz's. His strikeout total could probably be improved, but he basically needs to get luckier.

White Sox 6, Palms 5

It was a tight affair in Chicago, with the Palms finally taking the lead with a 3 run 7th. The White Sox fought their way back with a two run blast from AJ Pierzynski and a game tying sacrifice fly in the 9th. Jose Molina looked like he put the Palms ahead for good with a solo homer to lead off the top of the 10th, but Pierzynski came through with a game winning 2 run homer, his second of the game. White Sox 6, Palms 3

Unlike their trend through the season, and one that was commented upon here just 2 days ago, the Palms took a lot of pitches. They only had 5 hits, but took 6 walks. Unfortunately, Chicago had no problem reaching base by any means, and crossed the plate 5 times against Troy Munoz, and once more against Felix Gonsales. Hacking away

The Palms are always known for their aggressive yet successful approach at the plate. They typically put a lot of runners on base and do it with only a few walks. In fact, there are three hitters batting over .400 when hitting the first pitch (Martin Prado, Jose Molina and Ryan Henning). The team is hitting .347. Conversely, the team is hitting .214 with 2 strikes, and only Jaspero Gonzalez is hitting above .300 in that situation.

Is Ivan Fernandez fading?

Rookie Ivan Fernandez, the Palms rookie starter, is seeing his numbers begin to decline after two rough outings. In 9 innings, he has allowed 12 runs to score, while striking out only 1.He will have to be closely watched. Many young pitchers see their production lag late in season, after working more innings than they were used to, and Fernandez could be falling prey to the same problem.

Palms 10, White Sox 4

The two teams went back and forth through 3 innings, but then, the White Sox stopped scoring. The Palms went ahead on back to back to back home runs from Jaspero Gonzalez, Billy Dupont and Omir Santos. The Palms ended up hitting 5 solo home runs. Rays 5, Palms 4

Despite a 4-4 night from Randy Winn and 3 solo home runs from the Palms, Miami was unable to overcome the Rays at home. The Rays got a two run homer from Casey Kotchman in the top of the 9th to put the Rays up by the same margin. Randy Winn, among his 4 hits, had two of the team's home runs and hit one of them in the 9th to pull it within 1, but it was not enough. The slumping Ayoz Sadan

Since the 22nd of June, a month now, Ayoz Sadan only has 2 multi-hit games and has seen his batting average drop to .285. Management is considering dropping him in the lineup, perhaps swapping him out with Frank Sohn. The problem is that Sadan is the most feared, exclusively left handed bat in the order, and having an all righty middle of the order isn't exactly optimal. The best hope is to hope Sadan can turn it back around.

Palms 11, Orioles 5

The Palms struck early, mashing Mitch Atkins' pitches and scoring 11 quick runs. They did it with 4 home runs, but the biggest hit was a bases clearing double by Randy Winn that drove in three. Troy Munoz had a decent 5 innings, but his 4th inning was a struggle, when he allowed the O's to score 3 of their 5. Double headers on the horizon

The Palms had two rainouts at the beginning of the season, and it will soon be time to play those games. In a couple of weeks, they will have a 5 game series with the Yankees in the Bronx. On the next homestand, there will be an extra game at home, this coming against their current opponent, the Orioles. The Palms are playing better lately than they did early in the season, so the hop is that this pays off.

Orioles 6, Palms 4

The Palms led the whole way, right up until the end of the game. The Palms and Rangers had a contentious start to the second half. Two players were ejected after three batters were hit. It was actually the benches that were the most agitated, with Paul Janish getting tossed for bumping a Ranger after Jose Molina was hit. Two innings later, after Michael Young was hit for a second time, Nelson Cruz, the on deck batter, said something to get himself tossed. The best in the lineup

Who has been the best at the various lineup positions so far this season? Something to think about as the season enters it's second half. Lead Off: Coco Crisp - batting .279 in the 1 spot 2nd: Steve Drysdale went 1-3 in one game, but Martin Prado is batting .320 in that position. 3rd: Frank Sohn went 4-4 in one game, but Jaspero Gonzalez has .308 average with 11 homers in the 3 spot. Cleanup: Ayoz Sadan was positively brilliant, posting a .366 line batting 4th, but through the season, only 11 homers have been hit out of this spot. 5th: Jaspero Gonzalez really found his groove batting 5th, hitting .375 there. 6th: Lots of players have hit 6th this year. Ryan Henning had 1 good game there, while Martin Prado did well in limited time, hitting .349 in 63 ABs. 7th: Tony Abreu and Steve Drysdale each had one good game here, while Coco Crisp's .364 average in 22 at bats stood out for players with multiple games. Frank Sohn has a .325 average out of that spot. 8th: Many players have ha...

Prado and Gonzalez in the All Star Game

Martin Prado and Jaspero Gonzalez represented the Miami Palms last night in yesterday's All Star Game. The Palms third baseman came in in the bottom of the 4th as a defensive replacement, while Gonzalez came in an inning later. Prado walked off of the Braves' Jair Jurrjens, while later in the inning Gonzalez flew out of Hunter Pence of the Astros off of the Braves; Craig Kimbrel. Prado eventually was replaced by Michael Young in the 8th, with Gonzalez playing the rest of the game.
