Rangers 7, Palms 2

The pitching faltered in the series opener in Texas on Memorial Day. The Rangers scored three in the first, including a two run homer in from Daniel Murphy, the game's second batter, which was enough for the defending champs and Derek Holland, who stifled Palms bats. Palms 3, Angels 1

There was a pitchers duel in Anaheim this afternoon, between Dan Haren and Kevin Correia (though Correia had help from Blake Johnston and Manny Parra). Each team had 6 hits, but the greatest difference was the two home runs hit by the Palms, a two run shot by Martin Prado and a solo blast by Ayoz Sadan sealed the deal for Miami's first road series victory of the year. Palms 9, Angels 7

Miami broke the game wide open in the 5th, chasing Jered Weaver and giving the appearance that the Palms would run away with the game. Troy Munoz, strong until that point, broke down in the 7th and it became a game late. Manny Parra loaded the bases before he ended up getting the save in the second thrilling end in a row in Anaheim. Angels 1, Palms 0

Pitchers Tyler Chatwood and Javier Vazquez dominated this one, and relievers Art McLoughlin and Hisinori Takahashi locked down their opponents as well. With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, in truly dramatic fashion, catcher Hank Conger drove in the game's only run with a solo homer of Don Schoppe. It was an ugly way for the Palms to lose, but the pitching outing was surely appreciated. Orioles 4, Palms 2

The Palms were unable to execute in key situations this afternoon. They cobbled together 13 hits and a walk off of Orioles pitchers, but only managed two runs, and even they were scratched together. Somewhat downtrodden, the Palms head to southern California to take on the Angels over the Memorial Day weekend. Dave Balierough and Dennis Sarfate struggled early, allowing 6 runs in the first 5 innings, including a three run blast from Mark Reynolds in the 2nd. While the Orioles got out to a fast start, the Palms came on late, including a two run homer in hte top of the 9th from Paul Janish. Palms 7, Orioles 6

Through 7 innings, the Palms staff, including Kevin Correia and Don Schoppe had shut the Orioles down. Schoppe was left in for a third inning of work, however, and allowed 5 batters to reach after getting the first out. Art McLoughlin came in and blew the game for sure, allowing Robert Andino to tie the game at 6 with a grand slam. Thankfully, Randy Winn hit the team's 3rd home run in the top of the 9th, and Manny Parra managed to return the Palms pitching to dominant, getting a quick save. Troy Munoz held the Cubs hitless until the 5th game, when the Cubs strung together three hits to score their first run. There was a sacrifice fly 2 innings later for insurance, but pot starter James Russell didn't need the help. The Palms managed only three hits for the games and couldn't cobble together a run. The Cubs and Palms played to the evening on Saturday, as the game went 11 innings. The Cubs were the victors when Reed Johnson stepped in to pinch hit in the bottom of the 11th with two out, and lined a ball that hopped the fence for a ground rule double, scoring two runs, giving the Cubs the victory. Palms 6, Cubs 1

Ivan Fernandez had his best start of his young career in more ways than one. Not only did he work 8 strong innings, allowing only one run on 6 hits, but he got his first career hit as a batter, and boy was it big. After Doug Davis walked Paul Janish ahead of him, Fernandez turned on a 1-0 pitch and hit his first career home run, his first career hit in his first career at bat. Palms 3, Red Sox 1

The Palms split their series with Boston in a pitchers duel its safe to say nobody saw coming. Josh Beckett has been pitching well this season, to be sure, but Dave Balierough definitely has not been. Still, the only run he allowed was on a first inning homer by Adrian Gonzalez. Beckett scattered 8 hits, and the Palms scored their three in the 2nd inning, ending scoring for the rest of the game. The Palms winning streak came to an end as their two game set with Boston started. The trouble, as it often is, was with the bullpen, as Dennis Sarfate and Art Mcloughlin allowed the game to get out of hand. Rain out rescheduled

The Palms were rained out in Miami during the second of their two games with Baltimore. The game has been rescheduled for a double header in their next home series with the O's, which will come after the All star break.

Palms on pace for a record

The Major League record for home runs allowed in a season is 241 by the Detroit Tigers in 1996. The Palms have thus far allowed 82 home runs, 32 more than the next highest team, the Baltimore Orioles. This puts them on a pace to allow over 300 home runs this season, which would destroy any record on the books.

Palms 6, Orioles 5

The Palms have some serious mojo working. Down three going into the 9th, the Palms just didn't stop hitting. Billy Dupont was retired, then Omir Santos, Randy Winn and Paul Janish all reached. After Coco Crisp grounded out, Ayoz Sadan tied the game with a single and two batters later, Martin Prado singled home Sadan to win the game in dramatic fashion. The Palms finally broke out the brooms for the first time this season, as they swept the defending AL champions at home over the weekend. Javier Vazquez had his best outing of the year, allowing only one run over 6 innings, which was followed by 2 shut out innings from Don Schoppe. Jaspero Gonzalez had 4 RBI, including 2 in the 4 run 6th. The Palms went into the bottom of the 8th down a run against the Rangers. Palms 11, Rangers 5

The Miami Palms are having one of their hottest streaks of the season, winning 3 of their last 4 games including the first of their series against the defending AL Champions. The game was tight until the 8th, when the Palms, who were looking for an insurance run or two, batted around and loaded the bases for Martin Prado, who emptied them with a grand slam. The Palms in wins and losses

The Palms still have one of the worst records in the league, and the issues stem from their abysmal pitching staff. The problem is that the staff has been eminently hittable. The staff is giving up 12 hits a game with 2 of them going for home runs on average. It's no surprise, but the winning comes when the pitching is much better. In wins, the opponents batting average is .266. The BAA skyrockets to .329 when the team loses. A more consistent, better effort will be needed going forward.

Yankees 10, Palms 2

The Palms couldn't execute the sweep of their divisional rivals, despite the best efforts of Kevin Correia. Felix Gonsales lost whatever mojo he had at the beginning of the season, and has now had two very rough outings in a row. This time, he gave up 7 runs, all in the 8th inning as the Yankees pulled away in what had been a tight pitchers dual to that point. The Palms continue their homestand with the Texas Rangers. Billy Dupont heating up

The Palms are only 3-7 in their past 10 games, but none of that blame can be attributed to first baseman Billy Dupont. Dupont has hit .474 with 4 home runs. Part of the issue has been a lack of runners on base ahead of him. Despite the 4 HR's and an additional 5 doubles in the past 10 days, he only was able to accumulate 5RBI.

Palms 10, Yankees 3

The Palms started their season series with the division leading Yankees in good form. They were able to take on veteran Freddy Garcia, and were able to launch three home runs off of Garcia, including one from Paul Janish. The team batted around in the 6th, when Sohn hit his home run. He ended the game with three RBI. Javier Vazquez finally got his first win of the season in the dual between former White Sox teammates. Tensions were high late in this game, after former Palm Luis Montgomery drilled catcher Jose Molina, perhaps in response to a pair of HBP's earlier in the series against his teammates. At least, that's what Coco Crisp thought. Crisp was yelling at Montgomery from the dugout, to the point that he was ejected in the 9th, meaning Billy Dupont had to step in for the final at bat of the game. April MVPL Jaspero Gonzalez

It was a very tough month for the Palms. The pitching and bullpen, especially, have been a enormous problem, but the offense hasn't really lagged, especially in the heart of the order. The team's second baseman had a 12 game hitting stream, blasted 6 home runs and drove in 19 runs. Gonzalez is a rising star on the team, and is certainly a sign for hope for the Miami Palms going forward.

Palms 8, Mariners 5

For the third time on the road trip, the Palms took the opening game of their series, this a late game in Seattle. The Palms bats were live, hitting three home runs, including blasts from Frank Sohn, Martin Prado and even Randy Winn. Designated Hitter: Randy Winn

Randy Winn has said that this is his last year in the League, and his skills and stats are waning. His early season average of .241 and relegation to the bottom of the lineup are evidence of that. Still, for a team struggling early, his veteran leadership and availability for outfield duty will be important going forward.

Royals 5, Palms 3

The beginning of May began the same way April ended, with a frustrating loss. This time, Royals ace Luke Hochevar managed to hold the Palms bats down, as the Royals teed off on Dave Balierough early. The bullpen held the Royals to only one run, but the damage had been done already. The Palms also tried a new lineup, with Coco Crisp and Ayoz Sadan moving up in the lineup, but the top three went hitless. The team is now done with the Royals for the year, which is good, as they finished 1-6 for the season vs Kansas City.
