Late Collapse Spoils Roeder’s First as Jays Steal One from Palms

By Vin Castillo

MIAMI — For seven innings Wednesday night, the Miami Palms played the kind of crisp, controlled baseball that wins close games.

The eighth inning unraveled all of it.

Toronto scored three times in the top of the eighth, turning a tight pitchers’ duel into a 3–1 Blue Jays victory and sending the Palms to a frustrating loss in game two of the series at Coca-Cola Palms Park.

The moment that should have been remembered longest came much earlier. In the third inning, Jason Roeder turned on a Tanner Roark fastball and sent it just over the wall in right-center for the first home run of his major-league career. The solo shot gave Miami a 1–0 lead and briefly lifted the dugout in a game where runs were at a premium.

“I didn’t even feel it off the bat,” Roeder said afterward. “I just ran. You hope those moments matter.”

For most of the night, it looked like it would.

Erick Fedde was sharp before exiting after 4⅔ innings, scattering three hits and allowing no runs while working around traffic. The bullpen followed suit until the eighth, when Wandy Peralta struggled with command, issuing two walks and surrendering three runs as Toronto finally broke through.

Singles by Cavan Biggio and Travis Shaw, along with a run-scoring HBP from Reese McGuire, flipped the game in a matter of minutes. What had been a taut, low-scoring contest turned suddenly irreversible.

Miami managed just four hits all night and couldn’t answer in the bottom half or against closer Ken Giles in the ninth.

After the game, the Palms announced another blow to an already stressed rotation: Fedde was placed on the injured list, sidelining one of Miami’s steadier arms. The club confirmed that Venezuelan right-hander Javy Blanco is penciled in to take Fedde’s spot the next time through the rotation.

The loss dropped Miami to 36–33 and left the club searching for answers after letting a winnable game slip away.

“Those are the ones that stick,” manager Scott Hatteberg said. “We did a lot right tonight. We didn’t finish.”

For Roeder, the milestone came with mixed emotions — a first homer that deserved better company in the box score.

“You want to enjoy it,” he said. “But you also want the win.”

Toronto did just enough to take it.
