Rangers 5, Palms 3

 Saturday, June 27, 2020 – Coca-Cola Palms Park

By Vin Castillo

The Miami Palms took another hit Saturday night—on the scoreboard and behind the plate.

Texas rode a pair of home runs from Ronald Guzmán and a steady outing from Kolby Allard to a 5–3 win, evening the series and dropping Miami back to .500 at 42–42. But the bigger concern came in the middle innings, when Matt Wieters exited and was later placed on the injured list.

In a corresponding move, catcher Francis Polk was called up from Triple-A Jackson.

“It’s tough,” manager Scott Hatteberg said. “Wiet’s a big part of what we do, especially with the staff. But it’s part of the game. Next guy’s got to be ready.”

Early Trouble for Fedde

Making his return to the rotation, Erick Fedde never quite found a rhythm.

The Rangers scratched out runs in each of the first four innings, taking advantage of four walks and a handful of well-timed hits. Guzmán delivered the biggest blow—a two-run homer as part of a three-RBI night.

“Just too many free passes,” pitching coach Tony Rico said. “That’s not us. That’s not how we want to operate.”

Fedde lasted 3.2 innings, allowing three runs before turning things over to the bullpen.

Offense Struggles to Break Through

The Palms had chances but couldn’t string enough together against Allard, who worked eight strong innings, allowing just two runs.

Miami’s first run came on an RBI from Edwin Encarnacion, and Brett Gardner added a late RBI single to give the crowd a brief spark. Pat Grant chipped in with two hits and an RBI, continuing his steady stretch.

But overall, it was another night of missed opportunities.

“We had some traffic,” Hatteberg said. “Just didn’t get the big hit when we needed it.”

Bullpen Keeps It Close

After Fedde’s early exit, the bullpen did its job.

Adam Conley, Mike Morin, and Wandy Peralta combined to allow just two runs over the final 5.1 innings, keeping the Palms within striking distance into the late frames.

But the offense never fully capitalized.

A New Face Behind the Plate

The loss of Wieters introduces another layer of uncertainty for a team still searching for consistency.

Enter Francis Polk, a call-up from Jackson who now steps into a critical role handling a pitching staff in flux.

“Just be ready,” Polk said before the game. “That’s all you can do. When they call, you go.”

Searching for Stability

The Palms have now alternated wins and losses over their last several games, unable to build sustained momentum.

One night, it’s a dominant pitching performance.
The next, it’s early struggles and missed chances.

“We’ve got to clean it up,” Gardner said. “It’s there for us—we just have to put it together.”

With the series finale looming and more roster adjustments already in motion, the Palms continue to search for something that has eluded them much of the season:

A stretch where everything clicks at once.

For now, it remains just out of reach.
