PALMS WALK OFF IN 13TH TO COMPLETE SERIES WIN OVER A'S
MIAMI — After nearly four hours of sun-soaked tension at Coca-Cola Palms Park, it was the soft crack of a Nick Markakis single that finally broke the deadlock. The Miami Palms outlasted the Oakland A's 1–0 in 13 innings on Sunday afternoon, completing a four-game set with back-to-back shutouts and their second series win of the season.
Markakis, who finished the day a nearly perfect 5-for-6, delivered the game’s lone RBI with a line drive to left that scored Yairo Muñoz from second, setting off a jubilant celebration near first base.
"You just try to keep the at-bats simple that deep into a game," Markakis said afterward. "It’s easy to start pressing, but Muñoz put us in a good spot, and I just wanted to find a hole."
Muñoz had doubled with one out in the 13th off T.J. McFarland, who took the loss in his brief relief outing. The Palms loaded the bases shortly thereafter before Markakis laced the winner.
Staff Aces Steal the Show
Lost in the late dramatics was a gem by Brian Kragh, who twirled nine shutout innings in his first major league start. The left-hander allowed just four hits and struck out 10, showcasing a sharp slider and a fearless presence on the mound.
"Kragh was phenomenal," said manager Scott Hatteberg. "He attacked from pitch one and never let them breathe. That’s as impressive a debut as I’ve seen."
The Palms bullpen carried the baton from there. Jeremy Jeffress, Wandy Peralta, and Cody Allen each pitched scoreless frames, with Allen earning the win.
Opportunities Aplenty, Until They Weren't
Despite logging 14 hits, the Palms stranded 14 runners, grounding into a double play and going hitless in their first 12 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Frank Sohn and Pat Grant each had chances to end it earlier, but were turned away by stellar defense or ill-timed popouts.
"It was frustrating for a while," said catcher Wellington Castillo, who caught all 13 innings and chipped in a hit and a walk. "But this team doesn’t flinch. We know someone’s going to get the job done eventually."
The Series Win Heard Around South Florida
Miami improves to 7–9 with the victory, erasing some of the sting from a rocky start to the season. After dropping their first three to the Twins, the Palms have now won four of their last six, finding a rhythm in both the rotation and lineup.
"It’s been a grind," Hatteberg said. "But these guys have responded. We’re playing with confidence, and it’s fun to watch."
The Palms will get a day off before welcoming the Rays to town for a midweek series starting Monday night.
