The Miami Palms stormed back with a five-run ninth inning to stun the Boston Red Sox, 9–7, salvaging the finale of their weekend set at Fenway Park.
For eight innings, it looked like the Red Sox were cruising toward a sweep. Bryan Mata turned in a solid start, limiting the Palms to four runs over eight frames. Boston’s bats backed him early, with Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. each homering off struggling Palms starter Erick Fedde, who gave up five runs in just 4.2 innings.
But the tide turned when Boston turned to their bullpen.
Matt Barnes entered in the ninth with a 7–4 lead and promptly unraveled. Miami sent ten men to the plate, collecting six hits including RBI knocks from Chris Korb, Edwin Encarnacion, and Brock Holt. Pat Grant solo home run in the eighth, and walked and scored the final run in the big 9th inning.
“Sometimes it’s not about how you start, but how you finish,” said Grant, who went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. “We weren’t gonna let another one get away.”
Brock Holt and Nick Markakis chipped in with three-hit games of their own, while Brett Gardner added a key outfield assist to cut down a run early.
“I’m proud of the fight,” said manager Scott Hatteberg. “We’ve taken our lumps, but today was a statement. We didn’t fold.”
Adam Conley earned the win with a scoreless eighth, and Chris Martin slammed the door in the ninth for his second save.
The Palms (3–6) head back to Pittsburgh for their series against the Yankees starting Monday. They'll hope to carry some momentum after snapping Boston’s short win streak and picking up their biggest win of the season so far.
