Palms Waste Early Lead, Fall in Extras to Angels

ANAHEIM — The Miami Palms' west coast woes continued Tuesday night as they dropped their second straight in Anaheim, a 12-inning, 5–4 heartbreaker to the Los Angeles Angels. A bullpen that had been taxed the previous night held on as long as it could, but Jeremy Jeffress gave up the game-winning single to Michael Hermosillo, capping a long and grinding loss.
“We’re running on fumes, man,” manager Scott Hatteberg admitted after the game. “But that’s no excuse. We had our chances.”
The Palms (11–13) got rolling early when Nick Markakis launched a solo homer in the second. Brett Gardner went 3-for-6 with an RBI double in the fifth, and Yairo Muñoz added a two-out RBI single to cap a two-run frame. Miami led 4–1 after five and looked poised to even the series.
But starter Erick Fedde walked four batters and couldn’t escape the fifth, eventually charged with three earned runs. Reliever Braden Shipley gave up a 2 run homer to Mike Trout, tying the game at four.
From there, both bullpens locked in. Wandy Peralta, Cody Allen, and Adam Conley combined for six scoreless innings, stranding runners and escaping jams — including stranding a potential game winning run at 2nd in the 9th.
“I thought the guys in the pen were nails,” said catcher Matt Wieters. “They gave us every chance to win that ballgame.”
Unfortunately, Miami's offense went flat. After the sixth inning, they managed just four baserunners. The Palms left 11 men on base, including runners in scoring position in the eleventh and twelfth.
In the bottom of the 12th, Jeffress got into trouble quickly, allowing a single and a walk before Hermosillo laced a line drive into left to end the night.
NOTES:
-
Encarnación continued his quiet hot streak with three hits, including a double.
-
Markakis’s homer was his second of the season.
-
The Palms are now 0–2 in extra innings and have dropped 3 of their last 4.
-
Hatteberg indicated the bullpen may get a fresh arm before Wednesday’s game.
The Palms will try to bounce back in Game 3 of this four-game set, with Blake Johnston scheduled to start.
