Early Thunder, Late Silence, and a Palms Victory

ANAHEIM — The Miami Palms did all their talking early Wednesday night at Angel Stadium, then let the bullpen handle the punctuation. Powered by three home runs and a relentless attack in the first three innings, the Palms tallied a in in their series with the Angels with a 10–5 victory.

Brett Gardner continued to swing the hottest bat in the Miami lineup, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis also went deep, part of a 17-hit performance that saw every Palms starter reach base at least once.

“After a couple tough ones here, it felt good to hit them early and force the game on our terms,” said Gardner, whose fourth home run of the season came to lead off the game.

The Palms jumped out to a 7–0 lead after two frames, chasing Angels starter Shohei Ohtani from the game after just two innings. Ohtani surrendered seven runs on six hits and three walks — a far cry from the dominant version Miami feared entering the series.

“He’s got electric stuff,” said Chris Korb, who contributed to RBI, “But he didn’t have his command tonight, and we made him pay.”

Markakis added a solo shot in the third to extend the Palms’ lead to 8–5 after the Angels briefly clawed back with four runs in the second and a solo homer from Jason Castro in the third.

That’s when the Miami bullpen took over. After Blake Johnston was lifted in the second inning following a rough stretch (7 hits, 4 earned runs), Jeremy Jeffress, Wandy Peralta, Mike Morin, and Braden Shipley combined to throw 7.1 innings of one-run ball, walking just one.

“Wandy gave us a huge three innings,” said manager Scott Hatteberg. “That let us breathe a little and allowed the bats to stay aggressive.”

Peralta’s performance — three perfect innings on just 24 pitches — may go down as the quiet MVP of the night.

Los Angeles threatened again in the ninth, loading up two base runners against Shipley, but the right-hander induced a lazy fly from Mike Trout to seal the game.

The Palms improve to 12–13 and will look to split the four-game set with a win in Thursday’s finale. Blake Johnston’s ERA rose to 2.60 in a shaky outing, while Jeffress earned his first win of the season.
