Palms hit stride, win second straight to take series

The Miami Palms wrapped up their series with the Rays on a high note Wednesday, putting up early offense and holding off a seventh-inning surge to claim a 6–3 win at sun-drenched Coca-Cola Palms Park. The victory, their second straight, brings the Palms to within a game of .500 at 9–10.

The Palms wasted no time jumping on Rays starter Brendan McKay, scoring twice in the first thanks to a double from Brett Gardner and an RBI single by Edwin Encarnación. They tacked on another in the second, then broke things open in the fifth with a three-run outburst that included a three-run double from Yairo Muñoz.

Matt Wieters also went deep in the second, his fifth home run of the season. “I’m just trying to keep it simple at the plate,” Wieters said. “I’ve been seeing the ball well this homestand.”

Erick Fedde rebounded from a rough start to the year with his best outing yet, tossing 5.1 shutout innings before giving way to the bullpen. Wandy Peralta allowed a pair of home runs in the seventh—one each to Kevin Kiermaier and Joey Wendle—but Jeremy Jeffress and Chris Martin locked things down over the final two frames. Martin picked up his fourth save of the season, still unscored upon.

“We’ve got some momentum now,” said manager Scott Hatteberg. “That was a good series. They’ve got a tough lineup, and we played clean, tough baseball all three games.”

The Palms will enjoy a day off Thursday before continuing the homestand against the Yankees. Blake Johnston is slated to start Friday’s opener.

Verdugo, Red Sox Pummel Palms in Series Opener

By Vin Castillo, Coca-Cola Palms Park  MIAMI — The Palms got a dose of reality Monday night, and it came in the form of a relentless Boston lineup and an untimely outburst from their veteran catcher. Alex Verdugo went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and the Red Sox racked up 16 hits en route to a 7-1 win over the Miami Palms at Coca-Cola Palms Park. The loss snapped Miami’s four-game win streak and featured a forgettable debut for newly called-up reliever Allan Persons, who gave up three runs on five hits in a single inning of work. Boston wasted no time, tagging Palms starter Blake Johnston for three runs in the opening frame, thanks to a pair of RBI hits from Xander Bogaerts and Mitch Moreland. Johnston lasted just three innings, surrendering four earned runs, and took his second loss of the season.
