Palms Blown Out by Bronx Bombers in Ugly Saturday Showing

 by Vin Castillo

MIAMI — The good vibes didn’t even last 24 hours.

After a gritty win on Friday to climb back to .500, the Miami Palms were flat-out overwhelmed on Saturday night, dropping a lopsided 10–2 contest to the visiting New York Yankees. The loss halts Miami’s three-game win streak and leaves the club once again searching for consistency.

“You can’t fall behind in the count, fall behind on the scoreboard, and expect to dig out of it against a team like that,” said Palms manager Scott Hatteberg, candid but calm postgame. “We just didn’t execute on the mound, and they made us pay.”

The Yankees pounded out 22 hits — yes, 22 — including multi-hit nights from six different players. DJ LeMahieu delivered the big blow, a three-run homer in a five-run sixth inning that broke the game wide open. Giancarlo Stanton collected five hits, and Mike Tauchman scored three times from the leadoff spot.

For Miami, the early innings looked manageable. Starter Brian Kragh allowed two runs on seven hits through four innings but kept things close. Then the bullpen entered. Braden Shipley was tagged for five earned runs in just 1.2 innings, and by the time the sixth was over, the Palms trailed 7–2.

“Braden’s stuff wasn’t crisp,” Hatteberg said. “He’ll have better days, but tonight wasn’t it.”

Offensively, the Palms managed just six hits, with Edwin Encarnacion’s two-run homer in the fourth inning accounting for all the damage. Frank Sohn and Chris Korb each added two hits, but Miami never seriously threatened after falling behind.

Gerrit Cole silenced the Palms’ bats over eight dominant innings, striking out seven and allowing only the Encarnacion blast to blemish his line.

Game Notes:

  • Miami pitchers combined to throw 147 pitches — New York needed only 106.

  • The Palms failed to draw a walk after the fourth inning.

  • Matt Wieters went 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts, snapping his six-game hitting streak.

  • Miami has not scored more than four runs in any of their last five losses.

What’s Next:
Miami looks to win the rubber match of the series on Sunday. Manny Parra, still seeking his first win of the season, is expected to start. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET.
