Yankees Power Past Palms in Homestand Finale
By Vin Castillo – Palms Beat Reporter
MIAMI — The New York Yankees arrived at Coca-Cola Palms Park still seeking their first win of the series. They left with an emphatic one.
Mike Tauchman launched a pair of home runs and drove in five, while DJ LeMahieu added a three-run blast of his own as the Yankees stormed past the Miami Palms 11–3 on Tuesday night. The Palms close their season-opening homestand with a 2–4 mark and will hit the road for Boston after Wednesday’s off day.
“They ambushed us tonight,” said Palms skipper Scott Hatteberg. “We couldn’t keep the ball in the yard, and we just didn’t do enough at the plate to respond.”
Jarod Lantz (0–2) labored again in his second start of the year, allowing four runs over five innings, including a three-run homer to Tauchman in the second inning. The lefty outfielder added a two-run shot in the seventh, extending New York’s lead to 9–3 and putting the game out of reach.
“He left a couple pitches where they could hurt him, and they didn’t miss,” Hatteberg said of Lantz, whose ERA actually dropped to 9.00.
The Palms briefly made things interesting in the fourth when Chris Korb launched a two-run homer—his second of the year—to cut the deficit to 4–3. Pat Grant also homered for Miami in the first inning, but that was all they’d get off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (1–0), who settled in to go seven strong with just five hits allowed.
The Miami bullpen continued its early-season struggles, surrendering seven runs across the final four innings. Jeremy Jeffress was tagged for three in the seventh, and Brian Matusz and Braden Shipley each gave up a pair in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
“We’re still figuring things out in the ‘pen,” Hatteberg admitted. “It’s a work in progress.”
Offensively, Brett Gardner went hitless for the first time in 2020, and the bottom of the order produced little spark beyond a late single from Matt Koch and a walk-filled day from Jaspero Gonzalez.
The Palms now head north for a six-game road trip, beginning Thursday at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, followed by a three-game set in Pittsburgh.
“We’re going to regroup on the flight, reset a bit,” said Korb. “It’s a long season—we’ll be ready in Boston.”
