Relief Pitcher: Brian Matusz

The Miami Palms bullpen will look to left-hander Brian Matusz as a veteran presence capable of handling key middle relief innings. Matusz, who appeared exclusively out of the bullpen last year, delivered mixed results. He finished with a 5.29 ERA over 49.1 innings and struggled with consistency, allowing a .308 batting average against. However, he managed to secure four wins and collect 15 saves when called upon in high-leverage situations.

Manager Scott Hatteberg expressed confidence in Matusz's ability to bounce back in 2020. “Brian’s got the experience and the composure we need in tight spots,” Hatteberg said during spring training. “We’ve worked on a few adjustments, and I think he’s ready to step up this year.”

Matusz’s repertoire, which includes a deceptive changeup and a solid slider, makes him a valuable matchup option against left-handed hitters. If he can cut down on walks (17 issued last season) and refine his command, he could be a stabilizing force in a bullpen that includes fireballers like Chris Martin and Jeremy Jeffress.

The Palms will likely rely on Matusz for crucial outs in the middle innings, particularly in games where the starters falter. Look for him to play a pivotal role in bridging the gap to the back end of the bullpen. A bounce-back campaign would be a significant boost for Miami's postseason aspirations.

*I am devastated to learn of Brian Matusz's passing. As the Palms are a simulated team, and further, we are simulating the non existent 2020 season, Brian will still be represented on the roster. Hopefully, if anyone who knew or admired him stumble across this blog will have a smile, imagining him still doing what he loved.*
