Relief Pitcher: Blake Johnston

Johnston is a curious choice to be a bullpen arm. After pitching mostly as a starter last season in AAA Jackson, Johnston is expected to fill the role of long reliever or mop up guy that was vacated with Dallas Chastanet and Buddy Carlyle moving to the closer role. Johnston doesn't rely on a hard fastball, but more on pinpoint accuracy, something that isn't often seen out of relievers. This could be a similar situation to the one seen with Chastanet last year, where the intent is to eventually move him to the role of starter next season.

Verdugo, Red Sox Pummel Palms in Series Opener

Alex Verdugo went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and the Red Sox racked up 16 hits en route to a 7-1 win over the Miami Palms at Coca-Cola Palms Park. The loss snapped Miami’s four-game win streak and featured a forgettable debut for newly called-up reliever Allan Persons, who gave up three runs on five hits in a single inning of work. Boston wasted no time, tagging Palms starter Blake Johnston for three runs in the opening frame, thanks to a pair of RBI hits from Xander Bogaerts and Mitch Moreland.
